Samus Aran Designs
A small selection of Samus Aran designs over the years.

I remember when the first Metroid Prime 4 trailer was revealed back in 2017, in a Nintendo Direct presentation. It was just a logo, and then the show continued with the discussion of other upcoming titles for the Nintendo Switch.

That was a little underwhelming. One would expect a more substantial trailer from a soon-to-release game. I suspected Nintendo was trying to ramp up sales for the Nintendo Switch, a new console at the time, out of hype and promises without being too specific as to the actual state of the game. Based on the realities of software development projects, jokingly, I commented to some friends, don’t expect this game to release any time sooner than 2022.

It turned out that my pessimistic prediction was actually quite generous.

That’s behind us now, and the project is back on track. A more recent trailer now states Metroid Prime 4 will launch in 2025. Previously we had Metroid Dread, which was a fine game in its own right, and Metroid Prime Remastered, a remake of the original Metroid Prime for GameCube. These are not trivial projects in hindsight, so the Metroid franchise has fared rather well on the Nintendo Switch, at least recently.

The image of Samus on the far right is a new iteration of Roller Skates Zero Suit Samus. At the time, when I drew that image, her most recent design was the one from Super Smash Bros for Wii U, and no Metroid games were in sight. And while those times were dire, I still find those boots amusing. I guess she’ll keep rocking those roller skates for now.
